Which Teaching Assistant Qualification Is Best for Beginners?
Starting a career as a Teaching Assistant is exciting, but choosing the right qualification can feel overwhelming. Should you begin with Level 2 or jump straight to Level 3? Let’s explore the options so you can make the best decision for your future.
Why Choose a Teaching Assistant Qualification?
A recognised qualification shows schools that you have the skills to support children’s learning, communicate effectively, and safeguard pupils. It also gives you confidence when stepping into the classroom for the first time.
Level 2 TA Qualification – The Best Starting Point for Beginners
The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning is ideal for beginners. It introduces you to the core skills you need to succeed as a TA. You’ll learn about communication, safeguarding, and supporting learning across subjects.
Most learners complete the course in 6–12 months while working or volunteering in a school. Once you finish, you can apply for entry-level TA roles and start gaining classroom experience.
When to Consider a Level 3 TA Qualification Instead
If you already volunteer in a school or feel confident in your ability to manage your studies, you might skip Level 2 and start with Level 3. This qualification prepares you to take more responsibility in the classroom and often leads to higher-paying roles.
How to Decide Which Qualification Suits You
Ask yourself:
-
Do I want to test the waters and gain confidence? (Choose Level 2)
-
Do I already have some classroom experience and want faster progression? (Choose Level 3)
Start by thinking about your career goals. If you want a solid foundation, Level 2 is the perfect choice. If you’re committed to building a long-term career, Level 3 could be the right step.
Next Steps to Start Your Journey
Whether you begin with Level 2 or Level 3, both qualifications move you closer to a rewarding career in education.
Level 3 might be the best starting option for you if you:
- Have some experience of working with children
- or, have experience raising your own children!
- Have experience studying
- or, are ready to get stuck into studying at Level 3
- Are already working in a school
- Or, have a voluntary placement where you are able to gain valuable experience
The biggest difference between the Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications are:
- The number of units – there are more units at Level 3
- There are more learning outcomes and criteria to be covered within each unit
- There is a greater emphasis on being involved in teaching and learning activities at Level 3
- At Level 2, the criteria asks for more ‘explain’ and ‘describe’, whereas at Level 3 there are more ‘analyse’ and ‘evaluate’ criteria. Being analytical simply means that you’re considering ideas in details and evaluating is the ability to balance positives and negatives or advantages and disadvantages of key concepts. Any good quality training will teach you how to do this at the start of your course.
Most important factors to look out for when choosing a TA qualification:
- Access to unlimited support
- Well qualified tutors
- Choose a reputable, well recognised training provider such as Alpha
- Ensure the qualification you choose is accredited by Ofqual
- Ensure the qualification is certificated by an Ofqual recognised awarding body such as NCFE CACHE or TQUK
